The Cool Spot: SCHOOL
Posted on November 4, 2009 by Lola
I haven’t updated the cool spot in a while…not because I haven’t been places, but because I didn’t really see anything that was really dope, cool, un-expected…until last week.
I went downtown [Toronto] to meet with an artist friend of mine by the name of Curtis Santiago [I'll mention more of him in the post later] and he decided to take me to a really cool breakfast spot called SCHOOL. School is located in Liberty Village, which is in downtown Toronto. It’s kind of in the middle of everything. About 10 mins away from everywhere you need to be…whether it’s the Lake, the financial district, or the fashion/entertainment district.

School is a really cute spot…not for any particular reason because the food is decent, but it’s just really interesting. The girls were dressed in school girl skirts and plain tees, and the crowd was a mesh. It wasn’t like Fran’s or Denny’s. It was slightly more culture-conscious…I’m not even sure that’s the proper way to describe it.
Either way, I would definitely recommend it. I had the Belgian Wafle with Mango-Papaya Brown Butter & Maple Syrup [$10]and Curtis had the Chipotle Cheddar Biscuit Sandwich – Fried Egg, Pepper Jack Cheese, Back Bacon [$7]. And I had a green tea as well. The portions are not big, but they’re good. Great when you’re about to go eat in 3 more meetings. [Spring Rolls awaited me right after]

[I took a snapshot of the menu, but you can def. see the full menu on the web]

Before I wrap up the post though, let me tell you a little about Curtis Santiago. He is an exceptionally dope artist from Canada. He’s bounced all over the place…from Alberta, to Vancouver and now setting up shop in Toronto. The fun thing about him is that he is an artiste‘. A friend and I were talking today about Rihanna’s new video and how she’s now trying to be an artiste‘ [You know what they call painters, sculptors and people along those lines] Curtis in my eyes is an artiste’. Let me show you a little something of what he does besides music.
These are simply exceptional. Basically he takes different ring boxes, and builds life inside them. It’s amazing. The detailing, thought, and creativity behind some of these pieces is incredible [I got the opportunity to see a few of them].

In April of this year, GakCity and ThePressPlayShow teamed up to release a Curtis Santiago x Mick Boogie tape titled “HAVE MERCY!!”. Make sure you check it out if you get a chance. You won’t be disappointed.
