Flick Pick: Public Enemies

Posted on July 31, 2009 by Lola

FLICK PICK – PUBLIC ENEMIES

I watched this movie before I left for Miami 3 weeks ago, and I haven’t had a chance to go back in the theatre, so as outdated as my choice may be…I feel it still makes sense for me to put it.
This was the 3rd movie I watched that week after Transformers and The Hangover [both of which were great by the way] I had been expecting it for almost a month now. I absolutely adore Johnny Depp. He has a mischievousness about him that makes him so sexy. And I truly do believe that he is one of the most versatile actors of our time. He embodies every single one of his roles to perfection. Sure, sometimes it’s easier to embrace the role of something obscene and far from realistic, rather than try to be someone you’re not in real life. Either way, Mr. Depp gets a standing ovation from me in every role. This one in particular even made me tear up. [Those who know me, know that's nothing new]
I don’t know what kind of expectations I had. I think in the overall delivery the movie met my expectations. There were things here and there that I felt were too extra, and I think at the end it dragged out a little bit for too long.
Basically Public Enemies is a crime film set during the Great Depression in America in the years 1933-1934. The movie focuses on the true story of FBI agent Melvin Purvis’s attempt to stop criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Pretty Boy Floyd. The film is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s non-fiction book Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34. Christian Bale plays FBI agent Purvis, Johnny Depp plays Dillinger, Marion Cotillard plays Dillinger’s girlfriend Billie Frechette, Channing Tatum plays Floyd, Stephen Graham plays Nelson, and Giovanni Ribisi plays Alvin Karpis. [Via Wikipedia]
If you haven’t seen it yet, I suggest you check it out. It’s pretty good for a first time watch. Would I watch it again though? Probably when it comes out on DVD. I’d rather go see Hangover instead and laugh my ass off…or Obsessed and drool over Idris Elba…again.

INSPIRATION: Rik Cordero + The Kickdrums + Three21 Media – Inside A Change (Mixtape)

Posted on July 30, 2009 by Ildino

I made this post under the category “Inspiration” because i wanted to introduce to you, Rik Cordero, who is an amazing video director, having directed, Slaughterhouse – The One, Royce Da 5′9″ – Shake This + Part Of Me, Jay-Z – Blue Magic, Joe Budden – In My Sleep, and the list goes on. What inspires me the most about Rik’s work is that his videos are different, they always have a certain feel to them, “true hip hop from a video perspective” i think is the best way to describe his work.
But the real reason why i decided to make this post was because of the latest project (movie) that Rik Cordero has been working on, Inside A Change. The movie, directed by Rik, will have its world premiere today in NYC. To get a feel of what the movie will be like, Three/21 Media and The Kickdrums put together an amazing mixtape titled, “Inside A Change”, featuring brand new music by Consequence, Joell Ortiz, Skillz, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Wale, Saigon, Royce Da 5′9″, The Kickdrums, J.A.M.E.S. Watts, Statik Selektah, Illmind, A.P., Nami Unreal and more. The story behind the movie is truly inspirational and  those who study Rik Cordero’s work know that he has been able to truly make change, brake the rules, and achieve great success so far in his career. I strongly recommend that you peep this mixtape, because its a true work of art, and if you do download it, please feel free to leave your comments.

FEATURED PHOTO: PHOTOWILL

Posted on July 30, 2009 by Lola

Two years ago I celebrated by 22nd birthday [hosted by the-now-world-famous Drake] at this really chill spot in downtown Toronto called Lobby.
One of my close friends came to the party, William Nguyen [also known as Photo Will] to support me on my birthday and to party with me. He took some flicks of the party with his digital camera and I remember saying “Damn you should have taken some more“. I had a photographer for that night [Quinntyne Brown] who was taking pictures of the guestsby a big black backdrop which turned out amazing. I should have had someone take pictures of the crowd too….I should have had Will..
Will and I used to continuously talk over MSN [we met in grade 10 high school] and he always bigged up my achievements and supported my career and my decisions. We went back and forth so many times on what he should be doing for a career…what path he should be taking and what his niche was…
It wasn’t until after that party [I think at least] that we both realized what he was good at. Will is a social person. He loves giving people the spotlight and loves capturing moments [whether on film or on camera]. It feels like it was just yesterday that we were trying to come up with ideas for the blog…[Where's Will? A spin off "Where's Waldo"...where Will would take a picture of some part in the city and for the viewers to guess where it was?]
Event photography was his start. Frequenting the clubs and social circles in Toronto and taking photos made him a necessity in the party scene. Not only was Will dedicated to his craft, but he was punctual, social, admirable, hard working, and incredibly sweet to the ladies. His work and his quick turn-around on photos became well known and before we all knew it William Nguyen became Photo Will. In February of 2008 he became a participant of the Remix Project; an arts community centre in downtown Toronto. Following the Creative Arts program the centre offered under the direction of Bryan Espiritu [One of Toronto's most talented designers] Will met the right individuals and obtained the necessary skills to propel himself forward in the business of art. Today his photos are beyond event photography but still continue to capture moments….some of the best moments in time. Today he is a program leader himself. His CONCRETE WILLDERNESS has become home to 9 participants who attend the community centre once a week to learn, grow and maybe one day become their own “Photo Will” [To visit Will's blog go to www.lostinthewillderness.com]

FEATURED ARTIST: MACK MAINE [YOUNG MONEY]

Posted on July 29, 2009 by Lola

Straight out of the Hollygrove section in New Orleans, Mack Maine is Young Money Entertainment’s next up. You may just be hearing about him now, but Mack has been grinding down south for quite some time. With failed career moves under music impresario Tony Mercedes, as well as under former NBA ballplayer Johnathan Bender, Mack realized making it on his own was easier said than done. He finally got a break when he rapped his way to MTV in a battle competition, and even landed on BET’s Rated Next with a leaked song he’d recorded, garnering the attention of a long-time friend from the neighborhood, Lil Wayne.
Wayne and Mack had ties going back for years, even having traveled together in the days of the Hot Boys, but Wayne had never known the talent Mack possessed until seeing him on BET. From there it was on, and Mack became the newest member of the Young Money imprint.
Since the moment Mack got with YM, he’s been featured on dozens of mixtapes with Weezy and the team. Fan favorites such as the Knuck if You Buck freestyle (think “Young Maine for president, I’d prolly paint the White House black if it was my residence…“), Ride with the Mack, and Welcome to the Zoo have garnered him much attention and his name slowly but surely is becoming the talk of the town.
In 2008, Mack Maine appeared on the official remix of Lil Wayne’s third single from The Carter III, “Got Money” and performed the song with Wayne on Saturday Night Live on September 14th. At the 2008 Ozone Awards, he won the “Patiently Waiting: Louisiana” award.
In 2009, Mack Maine performed with Lil Wayne on his “I Am Music” tour, performing every night in his own set, as well as mtvU’s Spring Break 2009 concert. He also released a mixtape presented by DJ Don Cannon entitled “This is Just a Mixtape” featuring appearances from Lil Wayne, Mistah Fab, Gorilla Zoe, Pleasure P, Rick Ross, Mystikal and Soulja Slim. Recently Mack Maine appeared on the Young Money single and video “Every Girl” as well as Lil Wayne ft. Baby video for ” Always Strapped”
