Give Money Make Change

Posted on May 30, 2009 by Cynthia

“Give Money Make Change” is a fundraising event thats being put on by our friends over at the Remix Project.
The event is an effort to raise funds for Remix in order to save its courses and find a new home it’s set to take place on June 11th at Circa in Toronto.

The Remix Project has been receiving awards and accolades since it’s inception in October of 2006. Running for almost three years now, the program has successfully graduated close to a 120 young people from diverse backgrounds and situations through it’s programs who have gone on to comprise the backbone of Toronto’s burgeoning urban cultural and lifestyle industries.
Despite all these successes for the young people and cultural industries of Toronto, The Remix Project itself approaches a state of crises. Nearly half of its funding came through the direction of research from National Crime Prevention Canada (NCPC). Deemed a success by NCPC and even worthy of replication in other cities around the country, they are unfortunately unable to continue to fund any project past its initial “pilot” and “research” phase.
Add to this the fact that the program’s lease is up at their current location come August 31st with no chance for renewal (the building is being torn down to make way for new condominium developments) and the need for community support for the United Nations award-winning, mayor’s community safety panel priority, life and technical skills program is major.
Remix provides young people with the opportunity to stay out of trouble and focus their energy on.Even our own Karla “HustleGRL” Moy calls this place home, it allows youth to take their talents and showcase them in a positive manner.
They’ve been giving to so many of our youth and not asked for anything in return.
So on June 11th lets put all that “Screface Capital” stuff to the side if only for ONE night. Let’s go out and lend some support to people who deserve some support and who have been supporting and encouraging our city’s youth. Give Money, Make Change.

Check out this video of Lola showing love to the cause.

Rick Ross – Rich Off Cocaine

Posted on May 27, 2009 by Cori

You ask anyone what the best song is off “Deeper Than Rap” and most will say Rich Off Cocaine. I still say its Valley Of Death, though (I’m always one to go against the grain ) and Cigar Music, mind you that was left off the album. Anyway, here is the new vid for Rich Off Cocaine that was filmed during his recent trip to Medellin, Colombia. Enjoy.

Sunday, June 14, 2009 2:00 pm,
Mod Club
722 College Street, Toronto
Admission $5.00 for Spectators (i.e. anyone not on stage)
We STRONGLY suggest you arrive by 1:00pm to register. There are a limited number of audition spots and we anticipate only being able to audition approximately 200 artists
Do you have what it takes? We’re searching the country for female artists, representing hip hop, jazz, soca, r&b, gospel, rock, dancehall, blues, alternative, opera, country – all styles of music.
If you’re interested in auditioning for the Honey Jam showcase, come with a bio, photo, and background music on CD. You can also perform with a live instrument. You can do an original song or a cover, but if you do a cover you should bring your own style to it. Please note, we will not be auditioning dancers or spoken word artists.
If your audition background music is on CD, the track you are using should be the only thing on the CD, which should also be cued and labelled with your name.
Your bio should include your age, address, email, whether or not you have a manager and, if so, his/her contact info, how long you have been performing, places you have performed in the past, and any upcoming gigs.
In terms of the audition procedure, you do not need to make an appointment. You will be given a number when you arrive and will audition when that number is called. Each auditionee only has approximately 1 minute to perform. Only those chosen for the showcase will be notified within a month of the audition.
Please audition with the same material you would do at the showcase if chosen.
For artists outside of Ontario unable to attend the auditions, you can email to honeyjaminfo@gmail.com a link to a live video of you performing the song you’d like to do if selected along with your bio and photo.
It must be received by June 1, 2009 in order to be considered.

Featured Artist: Julian Marley

Posted on May 20, 2009 by Lola

Julian Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley and Barbados-born Lucy Pounder, is a naturally talented musician, singer, songwriter, and entertainer. Julian is releasing his album Awake on May 26th and is playing select dates on the Blazed & Confused tour with Snoop Dogg, Slightly Stoopid, and brother Stephen.

The May 2009 release of Awake comes on the heels of an emotionally charged year. Awake is a call for everyone – youths and elders – to awaken to life’s joy and rewards and to live positive. The roots-reggae sound that Julian Marley has distinctly made his own is supported by the street-energy infusion of hip-hop, bubbling dancehall, and a smooth combination of R&B and reggae.

The first single from Awake is “Boom Draw,” an easy roots-dancehall tune that will surely have fans moving to its rock solid rhythm. More great tracks on Awake include “Little to Late” with Stephen Marley on guest vocals, “Violence in the Street” with Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, and “Oh Girl” featuring American rapper Mr. Cheeks.

Awake is produced by Julian Marley, along with Stephen and Damian Marley.

T.I. Will Likely Only Serve 2 Months

Posted on May 18, 2009 by Cori

!!! UPDATE !!!
as of May 20, 2009
After initial reports stated T.I. would have his 366-day sentence reduced to nearly 60 days due to home detention credits, a U.S. Attorney’s Office rep has clarified the rapper’s actual time behind bars.
Spokesperson Charysee Alexander broke down the prison stint Tip would likely be serving:

According to Alexander, the rapper was indeed given credit for the 305 days of home confinement he served while awaiting trial in the case, but that has nothing to do with his prison sentence. The confusion may have stemmed from mixing the credit for home confinement with the prison sentence, which are separate terms, Alexander said. Once T.I. completes the prison term, he will still have to serve out the remainder of his home confinement, she said, which will amount to about two months. Alexander explained that, at best, according to federal sentencing guidelines, anyone who serves more than one year in prison is eligible for a 15 percent “good time” credit, which in Tip’s case could shave almost 55 days off his sentence. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Rapper T.I. will be coming to Arkansas — to serve a federal prison sentence.
T.I., whose real name is Clifford J. Harris Jr., must report to Forrest City’s low-security federal prison by noon on May 26, according to court filings. There, Harris will join 1,500 other inmates as he serves a year-and-one-day prison sentence after pleading guilty in March to federal weapons charges in Atlanta.
The rapper, the self-proclaimed “King of the South,” had faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each charge in his three-count indictment.
Harris will be credited for 305 days of home detention he already has served after being charged, so his stay at the Forrest City prison likely will be only two months.
R.D. Weeks, a spokesman for the prison, said Harris likely would be treated like any other prisoner coming into the facility.
“Unless there are custody or security concerns, all incoming inmates are placed in general population,” Weeks told The Associated Press.
Weeks said each cell at the prison is double-bunked. Harris also will have the opportunity to use the recreation yard, as well as take part in counseling or participate in the one of the facility’s 14 religious groups, Week said.
Harris, 28, was arrested after trying to buy unregistered machine guns and silencers from undercover federal agents in 2007. That came after Harris’ best friend was killed following a post-performance party in Cincinnati in 2006. The rapper has said the bullets that killed his friend were meant for him.
Upon his release, Harris will be on probation for three years. He also must pay a $100,000 fine as part of his sentence.
Harris’ sixth album, “Paper Trail,” has sold about 2 million copies and the rapper earned a Grammy for the song “Swagga Like Us” that he performed with Jay-Z. Harris wrote the lyrics for the album while awaiting trial.
